About Us

Family Roots

Mexico Cafe has been family owned and operated since 1965, built on the home-style cooking traditions of our family from Durango, Mexico. Our parents, Celia and Jessie Rivas, learned their way in the kitchen and in business through family, hard work, and years spent working in the fields after moving from Denver, Colorado to Washington. What began as a family effort—Celia and her daughters cooking, Jessie managing the cafe, and siblings working the floor—became the first Mexican restaurant in the valley at that time, serving the very farmers who had once employed our family.

Through three locations and generations, Mexico Cafe has remained true to the recipes and style passed down from our mother. Our food reflects Mexican home cooking rather than typical restaurant fare, featuring dishes like chile verde made from my mother’s recipe, smothered burritos, chimichangas, crisp patty tacos, enchiladas, and our well-known mild green onion salsa, now offered alongside spicier options. I have operated the cafe since 1981, joined by my wife in 1993, continuing the tradition started by my parents and preserving the dishes that define Mexico Cafe today.

We invite you to join us and experience the family cooking and traditions that have shaped Mexico Cafe for decades.
